Older-U; This Is a blog website in a magazine format for older people in our community, and our plan is to be entertaining, informative, and supportive of people in this age group. We aim to bring you news, views, fun plus helpful items on a whole range of topics that are of interest to older people of all ages.
We hope you enjoy the Older-U website. The original idea of Older-U came from its Author, Paul Swin. The idea is to create a site, especially for older people, basically 45 years old to 70 and more. It is to be a sign-post for older people on the internet with aim of pointing them in the right direction for things like health, keeping fit and active, along with fun stuff like holidays and hobbies.
“Getting older is not easy,” Paul Swin said “and that anyone navigating the path to ripe old age is going to need a bit of help” Apart from the aches and pains associated with getting older, there are quite a few emotional and mental issues to deal with too.
Older-U has a non-political point of view, but we do want to stand up for older people in society and hopefully instill a positive and healthy view of life.
Paul Swin, Bio: A little bit about me.
I started my working life at the age of 15 as an apprentice electronics engineer (radio sets had tubes in them in those days) and this has left me with a love for technology. Skipping quite a bit of time, I found myself as a sales manager with responsibilities for buying, customer care, and staff training for quite a large electronics retail company. Working there, I learned so much. I then went on to set up a couple of other successful companies of my own, all based around good service to people and the internet.
I live and work in the United Kingdom on the sunny (when it’s not raining) Sussex Coast. I am a Director of my own Company, a Qualified Private Pilot, and a Teacher of Tai Chi and enjoy instilling in people a positive attitude to life.
Paul Swin: “I am well qualified to cover these subjects for older people because I am already flipping old myself”.
What brought me to this point and setting up Older-U?
About 10 years ago my mother passed away, leaving my Dad having to go into a care home, due to him being partially sighted, and having walking difficulties. He was mentally still quite sharp.
He was not treated well at the care home which was staffed by mostly young female staff. Their bad practices included not allowing him to make the simplest of choices, like what and when to eat, as well as what to wear. The choices he had made for himself all his life, and he is now being told what he can and cannot do by a 17-year-old.
Now, Dad was previously a successful and proud businessman. In this care home, sitting next to him in a communal day room were people who had done Ok in life and previously been a Bank Manager, Pianist, Window Cleaner, Nurse, all of whom had been somebody, now turned into virtual nobodies and suffering the indignities of this place.
Well, this has left me with the desire to stand up for and help where I can, older people in our society.
Dad sadly passed away about a year later – and that care home has now been closed down.
